Grampian had six players competing at the 2007 Nordic Junior Open which was held in Malmo Sweden in September. Most of the players were very much at the youngest end of their age groups and put in performances well beyond expectation.  The event was the first European Squash Federation Super Series event of the 2007-2008 season callander and attracted over 230 participants, from throughout the UK and Europe of which 18 were Scots.

 

The boys U17 competition saw 47 players contest for positions, with Sam Allan continuing to put in excellent performances throughout, to secure 15th position, none more so than his last match against Jan Koman of Slovakia, winning through 7-9, 2-9, 9-2, 9-2, 9-7

 

In the Girls U17 event Robyn Hodgson, emulated last seasons success, with yet another runners up spot. Robyn’s best performance in the tournament was her semi final victory against Toke Vanwesemael of Belgium coming through 3-9, 9-3, 9-2, 1-9, 10-8. Mhairi Charlton secured 10th position with some similar gutsy performances, her personal best being the defeat of the Israeli number one  Mor Bikovsky 5-9, 3-9, 9-5, 9-4, 9-0. In the same event Lindsay Ackers finished 18th out of the 23 players, defeating Karoline Hegbom of Norway 27/0 along the way.

In the Girls U15’s Rosie Allan came a very creditable 6th position defeating Englands Georgie Ingham 5-9, 9-3, 9-5, 5-9, 9-4 to make the 5th / 6th play off. Rosie only moved up to this age group three months ago. Team mate Lauren Hodgson finished 12th out of the 21 competitors, defeating Celina Gyde of Denmark 9-7, 9-2, 9-7 in her first round.

 

The squash Academy had 3 coaches at hand, to assist the players, including Grampian’s Gerry Towler. Gerry proudly stated - “all of the players competed strongly, behaved impeccably and gave 100% in their matches. I was very proud of them all”.

 

The next major competition for the players is the Scottish Junior Open which will be contested between Christmas and the new – year. This competition is to be held at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.
